Chapter Two: The First Shoot
Chapter Two: The First Shoot
At Dawn
Guinevere hadn’t slept.
The gold waist chain pressed its little spikes into her skin every time she shifted. The anklet bells kept up their soft, stupid chiming. The nose-to-ear chain tugged at her face if she turned her head too fast.
By 3 AM she’d given up on sleep entirely. She sat by the window in the dark, still wearing all of it. Heavy and too intimate for something she hadn’t chosen to put on herself.
She got up, went into the shower, turned the water on hot. Left the chains locked, no point fighting that, and cut the cyan bikini off her body, top and bottom both, so it was only the gold left against wet skin. The scissors were nail scissors, and it took a while. The bells chimed under the spray, muffled and strange.
She wrapped a towel around herself after. It barely covered anything. The gold at her thighs sat right there, visible.
In the mirror: forty, nearly naked, dressed in precious metal. She tried holding the nose chain still so it wouldn’t chime with her breathing. She gave up before trying again anyway, two fingers pinching the chain flat to her cheek, and stood like that a while.
She looked owned and indecent.
6:00 AM - Pickup
The knock came at 5:45 but she ignored it.
At six she opened the door in the towel and nothing else. Marcus stood there, eyes doing a quick sweep before settling on her face and staying there a beat too long to be purely professional about it.
‘Morning, Ms. Martin. Ready?’
‘I’m basically naked, Marcus.’ She pulled the towel tighter. ‘Where’s my luggage?’
‘This afternoon. Confirmed now.’ He said it like it was the most natural thing happening. ‘Everything you need is already on location.’
She walked the hallway furious and half-dressed, bells chiming with every step, one hand clamped on the corner of the towel because it kept working loose. In the SUV, Diane turned around from the front seat, bright and excited.
‘Big day! How’s everyone feeling?’
‘Exposed,’ Guinevere said. ‘Ridiculous. Why couldn’t I wear something?’
‘You look incredible. Just breathe.’
The nose chain pulled at her cheek when she turned to glare out the window. Every bump in the road made something chime.
6:15 AM - Getting Ready
The tent had a makeup station, a rack, a mirror, and a stack of silver cases. Diane pointed her at the chair.
A young man did her face with almost no talking. Foundation, bronzer, a bit of contour. Every few seconds he had to lift the nose chain out of the way with one finger. Each time he muttered sorry. Each time she said it was fine.
‘Wardrobe,’ Diane said eventually, pulling the turquoise bikini from a case. ‘The 2006 replica. Go on.’
Guinevere looked at the open tent flap. Marcus was right outside. Assistants kept walking past.
‘Here? In front of everyone?’
‘Beach shoot, darling. No changing rooms.’
She dropped the towel. Stood there in nothing but the gold while the makeup artist kept working and pretended not to look. She got a foot through the wrong side of the bottoms, nearly fell, and had to start over. The top she tied herself, badly. Diane came around and fixed the back string, fingers brushing her spine.
In the mirror the triangles looked smaller than she ed. At twenty-two the same cut had sat flat. It didn’t now.
‘Better than the originals,’ Diane said, and meant it.
Then the second case opened. Black velvet. Titanium cuffs, short connecting chains.
Guinevere touched one. Cold. Heavier than it looked.
‘These are handcuffs.’
‘High-end bondage jewelry,’ Diane said. ‘They lock. The contrast is the point - the free young version of you against this. Ownership at forty.’
Something tightened low in Guinevere’s stomach. She looked at the case instead of Diane.
‘I wear these during the shoot?’
‘Second series. Classic shots first, then the cuffs. The collector wants both.’
‘Alright,’ Guinevere said. ‘Let’s do it.’
6:45 AM - The Recreation
Guinevere stepped out of the tent barefoot onto the warm sand in the tiny turquoise bikini. The gold was still locked on her. The anklet bells made soft noise with every step.
The beach was waking up. A few guests watched from the patio with coffee. Further down, some fishermen had stopped working. She felt it immediately - forty years old, almost nothing on, and people already looking.
Saskia came over smiling. ‘Guinevere! Gorgeous. Water emergence, same as 2006. You ?’
‘I .’
She walked down to the water. It climbed her legs, soaked the bottoms, and made the fabric stick. She went out until it reached her waist, then turned.
‘When you’re ready!’
She started walking out. Slow. Water running down her body. The bells kept chiming. More people stopped to watch.
‘YES! Perfect! Keep coming!’
She reached the sand. Nipples hard under the wet triangles. A few people clapped. She laughed once, embarrassed, and gave a small wave.
They made her do it again. And again. Ten times. The crowd grew. By the last take nearly thirty people were standing there watching her come out of the water.
After the pier shots Saskia lowered the camera.
‘Excellent. Classic stuff is done. Now…’ She looked at Diane. ‘Artistic part?’
Diane walked over with the black velvet case and opened it.
Guinevere looked at the titanium cuffs, then at the crowd still watching. She stood there wet, locked in gold, feeling the weight of all the eyes.
‘Ready,’ she said.
8:00 AM - The Artistic Elements
Click. Click. Wrists first, locked close together in front of her like something out of a courtroom sketch.
‘How’s that?’
‘Tight,’ Guinevere said. ‘Restrictive.’
‘Walk for me,’ Diane said.
Guinevere shuffled forward in tiny, awkward steps. The titanium ankle chains clinked with every movement, mixing with the soft, silly chimes of her gold anklet bells.
Her wrists stayed bound in front of her, pushing her full breasts together and making them look even more prominent in the tiny wet bikini. She felt ridiculously exposed - a forty-year-old woman, barely covered, locked in both gold and black titanium, shuffling on a public beach.
By now the crowd had grown to around fifty people. Many were openly staring. Some were filming and taking photos with their phones.
Guinevere’s face flushed deep red with humiliation.
‘Perfect!’ Saskia called excitedly. ‘This is exactly the contrast we wanted! The vulnerability is beautiful. Walk toward me!’
Guinevere shuffled slowly across the sand, chains clinking, hips swaying in small, restricted movements. The micro bikini clung to her body, the triangles barely covering her nipples and mound. Every tiny step made her breasts jiggle and the bells chime, drawing even more attention.
From the crowd she heard a child ask loudly, ‘Mama, why is that lady in chains?’
The mother shushed the child, but Guinevere still heard the quiet reply: ‘It’s art, sweetie…’
She wanted the sand to swallow her. At the same time, the overwhelming feeling of being owned, displayed, and helpless made her thighs press together with unwanted heat.
‘Now let’s do the water shots again - but cuffed this time!’ Saskia said.
The Emergence - Restrained
Marcus took her elbow and helped her toward the water. The crowd watched every short, awkward step. The bikini bottoms had already ridden up; she couldn’t fix them.
At the edge she hesitated.
‘I’m really supposed to go in like this?’
‘It’s safe,’ Marcus said. ‘I’ll stay right next to you.’
She shuffled in. The short chain made the uneven sand harder. A small wave caught her, and she stumbled. Marcus grabbed her arm, steady, quick, his hand staying there a moment after she’d found her footing again.
From the beach she heard a few chuckles. Her face got hotter.
She kept going until the water reached her waist. The fabric stuck to her. Her wrists stayed locked in front, useless for balance.
‘Okay - turn and walk back!’
Turning was worse. Tiny careful steps, chains pulling, body swaying. She nearly went over again. Marcus held on.
When she finally faced the beach and started shuffling out, it looked nothing like the earlier free version. Just wet, restricted, and on display.
Saskia kept shooting. ‘YES! The contrast is perfect!’
An older fisherman came closer as she reached the sand, looking genuinely worried.
‘Miss… you need help with those?’
Guinevere’s face burned. ‘No. It’s for the photoshoot. Art. I’m fine. Thank you.’
He didn’t look convinced, but he nodded and walked off.
Diane appeared beside her. ‘You’re doing great. Ten-minute break.’
Break Time
They set up a shaded canopy. Guinevere shuffled over in short steps and sat carefully. Even sitting felt restricted.
Diane handed her a cold water bottle. Guinevere tried to open it with her wrists locked close together. It was clumsy. Diane took it, unscrewed the cap, and gave it back.
She drank. Her wrists were already marked red from the cuffs.
‘Can we take these off for the break?’ she asked.
Diane checked her tablet. ‘Sorry. More cuffed shots right after. Better leave them on.’
Someone brought fruit, coffee, and a croissant. Guinevere ate standing, trying not to drop anything. The coffee helped. The rest was just awkward.
A middle-aged woman in a sundress came over, staring at the chains.
‘Excuse me… are you okay, honey? Do you need help?’
Guinevere forced a small smile. ‘I’m fine. It’s an artistic photoshoot.’
The woman looked her over once more. ‘Well… you look stunning.’ She walked off, already whispering to her husband.
Ten minutes later Saskia called out: ‘Ready for more! Pier shots with the cuffs!’
Guinevere stood up, sighed, and started the short walk toward the pier. The crowd had grown again.
It was going to be a long day.
1:00 PM - Lunch
They brought her lunch under the canopy. Grilled fish, rice, salad, and - draped over her chest and tied at the back of her neck by one of the crew before she’d even sat down - a child’s plastic bib, pale pink, printed with tiny cartoon starfish, the kind you’d buy for a toddler at a beach shop.
Guinevere looked down at it. The plastic sat stiff and shiny against the soft upper curves of her breasts, the little starfish scattered across the exact place her nipples pressed against the thin white triangles of the micro bikini. The bib was cut for a child. On her it barely reached mid-chest, leaving the undersides of her breasts and the deep line between them completely bare. She looked at the crew member, then at Diane.
‘You’re joking.’
‘It’s practical,’ Diane said, not looking up from her tablet. ‘You’re going to spill. Better the bib than the bikini.’
‘I’m forty..’
‘We know how old you are. Sit.’
Guinevere sat. The tiny white micro bikini barely covered anything: two small triangles of fabric that sat high on her breasts, the thin strings digging into the soft flesh, nipples already visible as dark points under the damp white. The bottom was a scrap of the same fabric, the front so narrow it only just covered the soft outer lips of her cunt, the sides high-cut so that the full curve of her hips and the tops of her ass cheeks were left naked. Wrists locked tight in front of her with zero leeway, the titanium cuffs forcing her hands into a useless little bundle against her stomach. The starfish-printed bib tied ridiculously at her throat, plastic edges digging lightly into the soft skin above her breasts.
She tried to eat. It was a disaster.
The cuffs made every movement stupid and clumsy. She could only lift the fork a few inches before the chain stopped her. Rice spilled between her fingers and scattered across the plastic bib, a few grains sliding down into the deep valley between her breasts. A piece of fish slid off the fork and landed sticky on her bare thigh, just above the high-cut edge of the bikini bottom. She tried to scrape it off with the side of her hand and only smeared it further, leaving a glossy streak of oil across the soft inner skin that led straight toward the narrow white covering her cunt.
Diane watched for a moment, then sighed.
‘Here. Let me.’
Guinevere’s jaw tightened. She wanted to tell her to fuck off. The words sat right there, sharp and ready. But her hands were useless, her stomach was empty, and the whole thing was already so pathetic that arguing felt even worse. She just stared at the plate for a few seconds, face hot, then gave a short, defeated breath and leaned in.
Diane lifted the fork.
‘Open.’
Guinevere opened her mouth. Each bite felt like it lasted too long. The titanium cuffs clinked every time she shifted on the chair. A drip of sauce missed her mouth entirely and landed on the little printed starfish instead of her skin, which she supposed was the entire point of the thing, and somehow that small mercy made it worse rather than better. The sauce spread across one cartoon starfish in a shiny orange smear. Diane wiped a bit of sauce from the corner of Guinevere’s mouth with a napkin, the cloth brushing her lower lip, then the soft skin just below it. Guinevere kept her eyes down.
The micro bikini top had shifted with the movement. One triangle sat slightly off-centre now, the edge of her areola visible above the white fabric, the nipple a tight, dark point pressing hard against the damp material. The bib did nothing to hide it. If anything, the stiff plastic only framed the soft, heavy curves of her breasts more clearly.
A couple walking past slowed. An older woman looked over, smiled in that soft, pitying way, and said, ‘Oh honey… they’ve really got you locked up, don’t they?’
Guinevere’s ears burned. She didn’t answer. She just sat there in the tiny bikini, wrists locked, being fed in front of strangers while the little bells on her anklet chimed every time she moved her legs in embarrassment. The woman’s eyes moved openly - from the child’s bib to the barely-covered breasts, to the narrow white scrap between Guinevere’s thighs, to the shiny smear of fish oil still on her bare skin.
Her husband looked longer. His gaze settled on the place where the bikini bottom disappeared between Guinevere’s legs, on the soft outer lips that the thin fabric only just contained, on the way the high-cut sides left the full curve of her hips and the tops of her ass cheeks naked on the chair. He said nothing. He only looked, the way a man looks at something he is not supposed to stare at but cannot quite stop.
Diane lifted another forkful.
‘Open.’
Guinevere opened. Rice and fish. Sauce on her lower lip again. Diane wiped it away with the napkin, slower this time, the cloth lingering at the corner of her mouth. A grain of rice had fallen into the deep line between her breasts and stuck there against the warm skin. Diane flicked it away with one finger, the touch brief and practical, but Guinevere still felt the heat of it land low in her stomach.
She felt ridiculous. Small. Exposed in a way that had nothing to do with how little she was wearing and everything to do with the bib, the cuffs, the slow public feeding, the way her body was being treated like something that could not be trusted with its own lunch. The micro bikini left almost nothing to the imagination: the soft weight of her breasts, the tight nipples, the narrow strip of white fabric that clung to the shape of her cunt, the bare thighs, the smear of oil still glistening on her skin. The child’s bib only made the rest of her look more naked, more adult, more obviously sexual by contrast.
Another pair of tourists slowed. A man in his fifties glanced once, then again, eyes catching on the bib and then dropping to the open V of her thighs where the bikini bottom sat high and tight. His wife tugged his arm. He looked away, but not before Guinevere saw the exact moment he ed how little the white fabric covered.
She kept eating anyway. Quiet. Tired. Too restricted to do anything else. Each time Diane brought the fork she opened her mouth like she was told. Each time the cuffs clinked. Each time the little starfish bib caught another drop of sauce or a grain of rice. Each time the bells at her ankle chimed with the restless, embarrassed shift of her legs.
By the time the plate was empty her face was hot, her nipples were still tight against the damp white triangles, and a thin, traitorous wetness had started to gather under the narrow of the bikini bottom. She could feel it. She could do nothing about it. The plastic bib sat stiff and ridiculous across her chest, printed with cartoon starfish, while the rest of her body - forty-two, soft, barely covered, clearly aroused in spite of itself - sat on full display for anyone who walked past the canopy.
Diane wiped her mouth one last time, then the corner of the bib, and finally the smear of oil from her thigh with the same napkin.
‘There,’ she said. ‘All done. See? Practical.’
Guinevere said nothing. She only sat there in the child’s bib and the micro bikini and the locked cuffs, face burning, cunt quietly wet, and waited for someone to untie the ridiculous pink plastic from her throat.
2:30 PM - Local Interactions
By afternoon, Guinevere had been locked in the black matte cuffs for over six hours straight. Her wrists were red and sore from the constant pressure. Her ankles ached. She was now in a wine-red tiny bikini that kept shifting, riding up between her ass, barely covering her nipples. With her wrists bound so closely together, she couldn’t fix it herself. Diane kept having to tug the triangles back into place while strangers watched.
‘Authentic local interaction shots,’ Saskia announced, which turned out to mean strangers lining up to take photos with the chained model.
‘Part of the artistic vision,’ Diane explained. ‘You, restrained and vulnerable, interacting with everyday people. It’s very conceptual.’
In practice, it meant Guinevere standing there cuffed and nearly naked while strangers asked to take photos with her.
A German couple went first, arms around her waist, and Guinevere smiled through it. The wife pressed close on one side, delighted, phone held at arm’s length; the husband’s hand found the small of her back and stayed there a beat longer than the photo needed.
More people came after that, in a loose, constant stream. Three college-age girls who wanted three separate photos, each a slightly different pose. An older man who asked whether the chains came in men’s sizes. A family with two kids who wanted a group shot, the youngest one reaching out to touch the ankle chain before her mother pulled her hand back with an apologetic laugh.
Hands landed on her hip, her thigh band, her shoulder, her waist, over and over. Somewhere around the twelfth photo she stopped flinching at it.
By photo twenty her face hurt. By the last one she’d stopped counting.
‘Wrap,’ Saskia said, around four.
4:30 PM - Release
Diane came over with the key, already halfway to the wrist cuffs, when her phone started buzzing hard in her pocket. She glanced at the screen, swore under her breath, and held up one finger.
‘Two minutes,’ she mouthed, then turned and walked off down the beach toward the water, phone pressed to her ear.
The wrists stayed locked. Ankles too. Guinevere stood there in the fading light, wet turquoise bikini she had changed into to end the day, clinging to her, watching Diane pace near the waterline and settle into what was clearly not a two-minute call.
The heat got to her first. The sun was still vicious even as it dropped, and standing still in the cuffs was making her skin prickle. She looked around, then waded back into the shallows because it was better than just standing there like an idiot.
It was awkward as hell. Wrists locked tight in front of her, she couldn’t really swim - just kicked and let the tide do most of the work, the chain between her ankles forcing short, clumsy movements. The wet bikini bottoms rode up with every step. She didn’t bother fixing them. There was no point.
By the time she came back up the sand, dripping, the tent was already half gone.
Wardrobe had started packing for the flight while she was in the water. Cases shut. The clothing rack folded flat. Towels and robes shoved into bags without anyone checking if the woman still standing there in cuffs might need one left out.
‘Where’s my…’ Guinevere started, water running down her legs, looking at the empty spot where her towel had been all day.
‘Already loaded,’ one of the assistants said, not unkindly, hauling the last case toward the van. ‘Everything’s going straight to the airport tonight. Sorry.’
There was nothing. No towel. No robe. Just the soaked turquoise bikini sticking to her skin, the titanium at her wrists and ankles, and the thin gold chains underneath catching the last of the light.
Diane was still on the phone when Marcus pulled the car around. She caught Guinevere’s eye, mouthed another apology, and pointed helplessly at her watch.
Marcus didn’t comment on the state of her, though his jaw did something brief and careful before he caught himself. He just opened the back door.
‘Diane said she’ll send someone up the second she’s off the call,’ he told her as she hopped in, wrists still locked, wet bikini leaving a damp mark on the seat. ‘Shouldn’t be long.’
Guinevere sat back, chains quiet against her skin, and stared out the window the whole way to the resort.
The Lobby
Her luggage still hadn’t arrived. She wasn’t going to sit upstairs soaking wet waiting on someone else’s phone call.
She went down as she was.
The lobby had a line. Four or five people at the desk, luggage carts, a family arguing about a room upgrade. Guinevere took her place at the back and knew right away it had been a mistake.
There was nothing to hide behind. The wet turquoise bikini clung to her. Her cuffed hands sat low and useless in front of her. The chain and the little bells did most of the talking, soft and constant, drawing a few heads from the seating area before she even reached the counter.
The young man at the desk went still when he recognised her. She recognised him half a second later - the same one who’d brought room service the previous night, the one with the poster over his bed.
‘Ms. Martin,’ he said, recovering a little too fast. ‘How can I help?’
‘My luggage. It was supposed to be here by now.’
‘Let me check.’ He typed, glanced at the screen, glanced back at her - not subtly - and typed some more. ‘It’s still in transit. Another hour, maybe two.’
‘That’s what I was told this morning.’
‘I’m very sorry for the delay.’ His eyes dropped to the wet triangles, to the cuffs locked in front of her, and came back up too slowly. Behind her the family had gone quiet. The mother’s eyes were doing their own slow inventory of the chains at her ankles.
A manager appeared from the back office, drawn by something in the clerk’s posture. Fifties, composed, clipboard already in hand. She took one look and didn’t pretend not to notice.
‘Ms. Martin. I apologise for the confusion with your bags.’ Her eyes moved once, briefly, over the titanium at Guinevere’s wrists and the gold underneath. ‘The project team did inform us you’d require some… accommodation during your stay. I hope the staff have been appropriately discreet.’
Discreet was not the word Guinevere would have chosen, standing in a lobby line still wet from the afternoon.
‘They’ve been fine,’ she said.
‘I’ll have your bags brought directly to your suite the moment they arrive. No need to come down again.’ The manager’s smile was professional and completely aware of what it was looking at. ‘Is there anything else you need in the meantime?’
‘No. Thank you.’
The desk clerk, still red around the ears, spoke before she could turn away. ‘I could bring a towel up. Robe, slippers, whatever you need. Really, it’s no trouble.’
‘That would help,’ Guinevere said, and watched him nearly trip over a luggage cart on his way to the linen closet.
‘While we wait on that,’ the manager said, checking something on her clipboard, ‘I don’t see a key card issued to you this afternoon. Do you have yours?’
She didn’t. It was still on the nightstand upstairs. Cuffed hands weren’t much use for carrying anything.
‘It’s in my room,’ she said. ‘I can’t exactly go get it myself right now.’
‘Of course.’ The manager didn’t blink. ‘I’ll call the shoot coordinator. I believe Mr. Marcus still has a master key from earlier. He can bring it down.’
It was another twenty minutes before Marcus arrived. In the meantime, the older concierge from her first night appeared - silver-haired, courtly, the same one who’d handled her jewellery at the desk that evening with more familiarity than his job strictly required. He didn’t ask. He simply took her by the elbow and guided her to the small bench near the desk.
‘You’ll want to be off your feet,’ he said, and sat her down.
Then he crouched. His hand closed around her ankle, checking the fit of the chain the way he had the first night. Cool fingers against wet skin. Unasked.
‘Still sitting well,’ he murmured. ‘Good. These cuffs are a solid addition.’
‘I don’t need them checked,’ Guinevere said. She didn’t pull her foot away.
‘Humour an old man.’ He straightened but stayed right there beside the bench, one hand resting lightly on her shoulder every time someone walked past and looked.
When Marcus finally came through the doors with the key card, the concierge helped her up himself and only released her once the key was firmly in Marcus’s hand.
‘There we are,’ he said, pleased. ‘Off you go, then.’
Marcus stayed close, closer than the job strictly required. Her hands weren’t going to open any doors on their own. He walked her across the lobby, the bells marking every step past the family still watching and the couple at the bar who’d gone quiet to track them to the elevator.
5:35 PM - The Elevator
She didn’t get the elevator to herself. Neither did Marcus.
A middle-aged couple stepped in with them - sunburned, a few drinks in. The doors closed. Mirrored walls on three sides. Nowhere to look that didn’t show the cuffs, the gold, the wet bikini.
The husband noticed first. Tried not to stare. Failed by the fourth floor.
‘Rough day?’ the wife asked, eyes on the chains.
‘Something like that,’ Guinevere said.
The doors opened. More people got on. Then a bachelorette group - sashes, glitter, loud. The elevator was packed. Guinevere was pressed against the mirror, cuffed hands trapped in front of her, someone’s bag knocking her hip every time the car moved.
‘Oh my god,’ one of the girls said, spotting the cuffs. ‘Is this a bit? Are you doing a bit?’
‘Something like that.’
The girl reached out and took the chain between Guinevere’s wrists, testing the weight like they knew each other.
‘Please don’t,’ Guinevere said.
The girl laughed, let go, and turned to tell her friends.
The elevator kept stopping. Every floor brought new eyes. A waiter with a cart who stared the whole way. An old man who very carefully looked at the ceiling. A teenager who got a photo before his mother could stop him.
By the sixth floor Guinevere just stood there and let it happen. Someone at eight asked if it was a hotel event. Someone at eleven asked if she needed help. She said no both times.
When the doors finally opened on her floor, the original wife was still somehow in the car.
‘Good luck with the rest of your evening.’
‘Thank you,’ Guinevere said, and stepped out with Marcus behind her.
5:40 PM - Back Upstairs
Marcus had the key card in the lock, the door just swinging open, when Diane came around the corner at something close to a jog, phone finally away, tablet in hand, eyebrows already halfway up.
‘You went to the lobby like that?’ Diane’s eyes went straight to the wet bikini, the missing robe, the cuffs still locked. ‘Where’s your towel?’
‘My luggage isn’t a small thing to just let go of, Diane.’
‘Wardrobe took it. Along with everything else, apparently.’ Guinevere’s voice had an edge to it now. ‘I’d have sent someone myself, except there was no one to send. So, I went down soaking wet in a bikini instead.’
‘I’d have sent someone up here if I’d known.’ Diane studied her for a second. The flush still sitting high on her cheeks, water still drying on her shoulders. ‘How bad was it?’
Marcus stepped back to let them both through, his job apparently done now that the door was open.
‘There was a line. A manager. The same boy from room service the other night.’ Guinevere walked into the suite ahead of both of them, arms crossing over herself out of pure reflex, uselessly, cuffed as she was. ‘It was exactly as bad as you’re imagining.’
‘For what it’s worth,’ Diane said, following her in, ‘the collector would have loved that. Unscripted humiliation is worth more to him than anything we stage on purpose.’
‘I’m thrilled I could contribute to the collector’s afternoon.’
Diane’s smile had sympathy in it, which was worse.
‘Let’s get these off you, at least. That much I can fix right now.’
She unlocked the wrists first, then knelt for the ankles. Click, click. The titanium fell away in the same order it had gone on, and the sand came with it. Red lines circled both wrists, already fading but not gone. Guinevere rubbed them slowly and her hands felt like hers again.
‘Sit. I brought the debrief up here instead. You’ve earned not going back downstairs again tonight.’
Guinevere sat and let herself feel exactly how tired she was.
Diane opened the tablet, wanting to show her the day’s selects. The classic shots were pretty. The cuffed ones were something else. Raw, a little frightening.
‘They’re strong,’ Guinevere said, and looked at the third one longer than she needed to.
‘Greece tomorrow,’ Diane said. ’6 AM flight. Santorini, the white cliffs shoot.’
‘Already?’
‘Get some rest.’
Alone finally, Guinevere lay back and did the math. One down. Eleven to go. Six months, all told.
She could still feel the cuffs with them off. Phantom pressure at both wrists, like a watch she’d taken off.
The money would matter eventually. Right now, it didn’t, particularly.
She had eleven more of these. She could do this.
9:30 PM - Level Two
Dinner was room service. She ate it alone, still locked in the gold, then showered carefully around the chains and lay on top of the covers in nothing else.
The email came through while she was still damp.
She almost left it. Some part of her knew it would be better in the morning. She opened it anyway.
Level 2 Adornments. Long. Technical. She had to read some parts twice. Diagrams she didn’t fully understand the first time. More permanent pieces. Longer wear - not just for shoots, but through flights, through sleep. Biometric monitoring so the collector could track her continuously. A section on modification options she skipped the first .
A living doll. That was the shape of it. Not the version that got unlocked at the end of each day. Further than that.
She thought about the lobby earlier. The manager’s blank professional face. The desk clerk who’d looked at her like the poster on his wall had walked in. She thought about the months still ahead. The money too - it would be dishonest not to.
Her breath caught halfway through.
Dread, easy to name. Underneath it, something else she’d been carrying since the beach. She didn’t name that one.
She sat with the phone in her lap until the room went dark. Then she typed a short reply with fingers that weren’t quite steady and hit send before she could reread it.
Done.
She put the phone face-down and lay back. The gold settled cool against her skin. One day down. Whatever came next, she’d already said yes.
